01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Some diners describe the special eel box as crisp-skinned and tender, while others appreciate its fragrant char and slightly rich sauce. Sweetness and intensity are a matter of taste, but the heart of a meal at Kiwara is savouring the eel, its grilling and the way it pairs with rice.

Unaju comes in regular, premium and special grades, making it an easy choice when you want to settle in for a meal centred on eel. Some diners have enjoyed bottled beer and crispy fried eel bones while waiting for their order. Liver soup is available to round out the meal, and grilled eel liver is also on the à la carte menu.

For something beyond eel, consider the Yanagawa-style hot pot with loach. One diner noted that it came with plenty of burdock as well as loach. Others have praised the cucumber pickles and the mozuku seaweed dressed in a seasoning that is not overly sweet—small dishes that can make a pleasing accompaniment to unaju.

Eel rice boxes take time to grill, so some diners suggest making a reservation if you are on a schedule to reduce the wait. Kiwara offers both dine-in and takeaway; delivery is not available. Payment is cash only.
